10 tips for
Leadership Development
and Employee Retention

Cheer Cartoon Image 1.   Evaluate the physical work environment for comfort, efficiency and aesthetics. Ask employees how they feel about the environment. It will make employees more productive. Make it more pleasant with live green plants, paint it a bright color, change lighting fixtures to a higher wattage warm bulb, clean out clutter, replace broken pieces of furniture and add fun and meaningful pictures and accessories which will increase morale.

  2.   Create a collage of photos that are special to the employees. Each person would hang one snapshot by the water cooler. Examples would be their children, pets, house, car, or spouse. Have a contest to guess whose pictures are whose. This works well for medical staff retention, too.

  3. Hire for attitude and train for skill. A good attitude will rub-off on other employees. People like to go to a business that enjoys being in business.

Ask Robin about an employee recognition speech.

  4. Reward people often with praise. As a reminder, start your day with 3 marbles in your left pocket. Each time you give someone a compliment, move a marble from your left pocket to your right one. At the end of the day the goal is to have a full right pocket and increased morale.

  5. Create a sense of spirit by giving to others. Cohesiveness is built with a challenge of helping those less fortunate. Have a “Christmas in July” day organized to help the elderly or infirm by painting their house, fixing their fence or washing their windows.

  6. Have a program where awards are given to employees in an employee recognition speech. Recognize employees who are the most creative in serving the customer. A customer who feels cared about will buy more and stay longer when a relationship has been developed. The most effective way to demonstrate caring is for employees to help them in solving their problems, even if it means selling them a lower priced item or nothing at all! The customer will be a customer for life and the employee will feel they have really helped someone.

  7. Offer the employees a fun-hour during the week as a reward for a job well done. As achievable goals are established and communicated to employees, they will know that they will get recognition when the goals are achieved or exceeded. An hour of fun to take a walk, window shop or call a friend makes them feel appreciated.

  8.   It feels special to be treated with a surprise. Take employees to an afternoon movie as a surprise after a big project is complete. The company pays for admission and snacks from the concession stand. For those people who cannot attend, give them free passes for a later day.

  9. When people are late for a meeting, charge them a small sum of 50 cents or one dollar. Every three or four months use the money for a “fun grant.” This grant money will be used to buy something to make the office a more fun place.

  10. When congratulating someone, give them a Kudos candy bar. When someone has saved the day, give them a roll of Lifesavers candy. Let them know specifically why you are recognizing and rewarding them.
