Great Book on Fun At Work
May 19, 2005
In the book, Joy at Work: A Revolutionary Approach to Fun on the Job the author Dennis Bakke does a phenomenal job of describing what makes work fun. He says, "We defined fun to mean rewarding, exciting, creative, and successful." It was not about "beer parties" or about "winning." Bottom line is that work is fun when people have the freedom to use their talents and skills for the benefit of society.
As CEO of AES, (an energy company that has plants in 31 countries, $8.6 billion in revenue, $33.7 billion in assets and 40,000 employees) Dennis Bakke created an environment where people wanted to come to work. It was built around the shared values of integrity, fairness, social responsibility and fun. His mission was to give people work that they were challenged by and thus enjoyed.
AES created subsets under each of the values to include accountability, ownership and trust. All of my programs are created around the four cornerstones of trust, accountability, awareness and team spirit. Finally a real life case study that demonstrates the importance of a creating a great place to work!
